Order gear on the same order as a kayak we're hand delivering or shipping, and it comes with the kayak.
Kayak Shipments
We deliver kayaks two ways. Inside our delivery area, we bring your boat to you ourselves. Everywhere else, it ships LTL freight with a carrier that reports a 99.9% damage-free delivery rate. We'll tell you which one you're getting once your order is placed along with more details.
If we hand deliver it
Nothing to inspect, nothing to sign at the curb. We're the ones unloading your kayak, so if anything is wrong, tell us right there and we'll take care of it. We will call before hand for a meetup place.
If it ships LTL freight
Look the boat over before you sign the delivery receipt. If you see damage, write it on the receipt. That one step is what protects your claim. Then email clear photos to helpdesk@cfoutdoors.com within 2 hours of delivery. We also will email you more details on this process once the order is placed.
What we cover
Structural damage. Anything that compromises the hull or would void the manufacturer's warranty, confirmed with the vendor. We make it right.
Cosmetic damage. Light scratches or minor surface dents that don't affect performance or structure. We send a repair kit when one is available. If you'd rather have a replacement, a 20% restocking fee applies plus full shipping back to us.
Description
The Tandem Island is a sailboat you can pedal. Eighteen feet six inches, a 90 square foot sail on an 18 foot mast, two amas on folding akas, and two MirageDrive 180 Turbo units underneath.
The amas are what make it work. Folded, the beam is 4 feet and it trailers and stores like a long kayak. Deployed, the beam is 10 feet, and a 10 foot beam under sail is a genuinely stable platform in open water. It is a trimaran that packs down.
Three ways to move: sail it, pedal it, or both at once. When the wind dies you do not sit there. When you need to hold a line into the wind you pedal through it. 600 lbs of capacity across two Vantage CT seats.
It is the biggest thing Hobie builds in this line and the numbers are serious. 130 lbs of bare hull, 240 lbs fully rigged. Plan your transport before you buy, not after.

Do I need to know how to sail?
It helps, but this is one of the more forgiving ways to learn. The amas make it far harder to capsize than a monohull dinghy, and if you get it wrong you can drop the sail and pedal home. Plenty of Tandem Island owners came to it with no sailing background.
Is the sail rig included?
Hobie lists the 90 sq ft sail area and the 18 ft mast as boat specifications, and the boat is built and sold as a sailing kayak. What we will not do is guess at the exact contents of the crate. Call us at (615) 696-7887 before you order and we will confirm exactly what ships for the configuration you want.
How big is it really?
Eighteen and a half feet long, and 240 lbs fully rigged. Folded to 4 feet of beam it trailers and stores like a long kayak. Deployed at 10 feet it is a small boat. Be honest about your storage and your tow vehicle before you commit.
Can one person sail it?
Yes, Hobie rates it 1 to 2 crew. Single-handing 18 feet of trimaran is more work than a kayak, and rigging it alone takes practice, but it is done all the time.
What do the amas actually do?
They are the outriggers. They stop the boat from tipping under sail, which is what lets a 90 sq ft rig sit on a hull this narrow. They fold in on the akas for transport.
What is the kick-up centerboard for?
It resists sideways slip so you can sail upwind instead of just downwind. It kicks up when you hit something or when you run shallow.
Can I still pedal it?
Yes, two MirageDrive 180 Turbo units, one per seat. Sail it, pedal it, or do both. Being able to pedal out of a dead calm is the practical advantage over a pure sailboat.
What are Kick-Up Fins?
Fins that retract by themselves on impact. Hobie’s own line is "Logs, kelp, shallows, rocks, no problem." The fin folds back when it hits something and drops again once you are past.
How do I move it on land?
Most owners trailer it. At 240 lbs rigged and 18.5 feet this is not a roof rack boat. Call us at (615) 696-7887 and we will talk through transport before you order.
What is the one mistake that voids the warranty?
Beaching the boat with the drive and rudder still down. Hobie lists it as an exclusion by name. Pull the MirageDrive up and flip the rudder before the hull touches sand or gravel.
How many life jackets do we need?
One wearable per person on board, and the law requires it. On a sailboat that can heel and move fast, wear them rather than stow them. The Old Town Outfitter Universal covers a 30 to 56 inch chest.
How long is the Hobie warranty?
Hobie covers 3 years on 2019 and newer models against defects in materials, manufacturing and design. Hobie repairs or replaces at their discretion.
Who handles a warranty claim?
Hobie routes warranty claims through the authorized dealer you bought from, which is us. Within 30 days of finding a defect, bring the boat and your proof of purchase to us and we handle it from there. That is worth knowing before you buy a big boat from a marketplace seller with no dealer behind it.
What voids coverage?
Normal wear and discoloration, abuse, skipped maintenance, hitting submerged objects, mooring or storing the boat in the water, improper transport or storage, weather damage, modifications, and rental or commercial use. One exclusion catches people out: beaching the boat without retracting the MirageDrive and rudder first. Pull both up before you slide onto sand or gravel.
How does the Hobie Tandem Island ship?
Two ways. If you are inside our delivery area, local delivery shows up as a shipping option at checkout and we bring the boat to you ourselves. We call ahead to set a meet-up, and since we do the unloading there is nothing for you to inspect or sign at the curb. Otherwise it ships LTL freight with a carrier running a 99.9% damage-free rate.
