Accessory Shipments
Paddles, PFDs, dry bags, helmets, skirts, motors, rod holders, and accessories ship UPS, FedEx, or USPS Ground.
It lands on your doorstep like any other package. We email tracking the day it leaves our shop.
Order gear on the same order as a kayak we're hand delivering or shipping, and it comes with the kayak.
Kayak Shipments
We deliver kayaks two ways. Inside our delivery area, we bring your boat to you ourselves. Everywhere else, it ships LTL freight with a carrier that reports a 99.9% damage-free delivery rate. We'll tell you which one you're getting once your order is placed along with more details.
If we hand deliver it
Nothing to inspect, nothing to sign at the curb. We're the ones unloading your kayak, so if anything is wrong, tell us right there and we'll take care of it. We will call before hand for a meetup place.
If it ships LTL freight
Look the boat over before you sign the delivery receipt. If you see damage, write it on the receipt. That one step is what protects your claim. Then email clear photos to helpdesk@cfoutdoors.com within 2 hours of delivery. We also will email you more details on this process once the order is placed.
What we cover
Structural damage. Anything that compromises the hull or would void the manufacturer's warranty, confirmed with the vendor. We make it right.
Cosmetic damage. Light scratches or minor surface dents that don't affect performance or structure. We send a repair kit when one is available. If you'd rather have a replacement, a 20% restocking fee applies plus full shipping back to us.
Astral Warranty
Astral guarantees every product against defects in materials and workmanship for the reasonable lifespan of the product. Coverage goes to the original purchaser.
If you think your Astral gear has a manufacturing defect, stop using it and file a claim on Astral's warranty page.
Description
The Astral Bird Dog PFD is a life jacket for your dog. It gives him flotation that keeps his head above water and a raised grab handle across the top, so you can lift him back into the boat instead of wrestling him over the side.
The shell is 500 denier Cordura nylon canvas, the same abrasion-resistant fabric Astral puts on its whitewater jackets, wrapped around a polyethylene foam insert. Nylon webbing, heavy duty acetal hardware, front buckle entry. Depending on size it weighs between 6 ounces and just over a pound.
Astral built this one for river play. If your dog swims hard in current, rides along in a canoe or kayak, or is still figuring out the doggie paddle, this is the jacket. Get the size right using the chart below, because a loose dog jacket slides forward over the head and a tight one stops him swimming.

How do I size the Bird Dog for my dog?
Measure girth, which is the widest part of his chest just behind the front legs, and match it to the chart above. Weight and breed get you close, but girth is what actually decides the fit. If he lands between two sizes, size up.
Will it keep my dog's head above water?
Yes. Astral places the foam so a swimming dog stays level with his head clear rather than nose-down. It is built for dogs already swimming in current or learning, not as a substitute for watching him.
What is the handle for?
Lifting. It sits raised on the top of the back so you can reach down from a kayak, canoe or raft, get a full grip, and pull him aboard without leaning over and reaching under him.
Is it tough enough for river use?
The shell is 500 denier Cordura nylon canvas, which is what Astral uses where abrasion matters most on its human whitewater jackets. Rock, gravel bars and repeated hauls into a boat are what it was built for.
How much does it weigh?
From 5.9 ounces in X-Small to 17.3 ounces in X-Large. Every size but X-Large is under a pound, so it is not something he has to carry around all day.
Can he wear it all day on the water?
That is the intent. Front buckle entry, adjustable fit and a light foam insert mean it stays on for a full float trip. Rinse it with fresh water afterward and let it dry.
My dog has never swum before. Is this the right jacket?
Yes, Astral lists learning dogs as one of the uses. The flotation gives him a stable platform to figure out the paddle, and the handle means you can reposition him without a fight. Start in flat, shallow water.
What color does the Bird Dog come in?
