Fishing in the summer can be a daunting task for those who don’t have much experience. At this time of year the rivers and creeks can be really shallow and super clear. In some cases I have been able to see straight to the bottom 30 or more yards ahead of me when standing in my kayak. So here are some tips for fishing in these conditions. When faced with these conditions I usually only fish with spinning gear rigged up with 6 to 8lb fluorocarbon. The lures I tend to stick with are finesse worms or anything that mimics small minnows or crawfish. When fishing clear water I always make long casts in front of me to catch fish that haven’t seen me yet. Remember if you can see them nine times our of ten they have already seen you. When you see eddies or calm water after rapids I always stop and fish these spots, because the water is usually deeper and little cooler. Plus bass use these pools as ambush opportunities. Fish cover or fallen timber on the banks, remember fish like hiding in the shade just as much as you do on hot summer days. If its raining this can be a great time to throw your favorite top water lures. When the water is clear I like to stick with a top water lure that looks a little more natural with a small profile. The last tip I can give you is to try and get out on the water as soon as possible. Even though fish can be caught during the hot part of the day, its better to go early in the morning or late in the day. The next time your fishing during the dog days of summer try these tips to get a few more fish in the kayak.
