Caney Fork River Fishing Report - Week of January 26, 2026
Date: Week of January 26, 2026
The Caney Fork River is currently experiencing a classic winter Shad Kill event, providing some of the most exciting fishing opportunities of the year. Cold temperatures have triggered threadfin shad die-offs in Center Hill Lake, sending easy meals through the generators and downstream to hungry trout.
Generation Schedule & Conditions
Status: Heavy Generation
As of late January, the TVA is running a consistent pattern of 1 Generator for the majority of the day (approximately 5:00 AM to Midnight). There have been brief windows of zero generation in the early morning hours (Midnight to 5:00 AM), but wading opportunities are limited and require careful timing.
Note: Schedules change daily based on power demand. Always check the official TVA Center Hill operating guide or call 1-800-238-2264 (Code 37) before your trip.
Fishing Report
Rating: Fair to Good
The "Shad Kill" is the main event. Large Brown and Rainbow Trout are keying in on the dying shad. The water is mostly clear, though heavy generation can stir up some stain. This is a time to target trophy fish that are feeding aggressively on high-protein prey.
Recommended Lures & Flies
With the shad kill in full swing, White and Silver are the colors of the week.
Fly Fishing
- Streamers: White Zonkers, White/Chartreuse Clouser Minnows, Pearl Sparkle Minnows.
- Nymphs (Low Water/Slow Bite): Zebra Midges (Size 18-22, Black/Silver), Scuds (Grey/Tan), Egg Patterns.
Spin Fishing
- Hard Baits: Suspending Jerkbaits (2.5-3.5 inch) in White or Silver.
- Soft Plastics: 3-inch White Swimbaits or Flukes on a jig head.
