Jackson Coosa FD Review
The Jackson Coosa FD takes the Coosa HD hull and deck, which already had a following, and puts the Flex Drive Mark IV under it. Twelve foot seven, 35 inches wide, 450 pounds of capacity.
The interesting part is what the drive does when you stop needing it. The propeller retracts up into the hull rather than hanging below it, which means you can run it into a gravel bar, beach it on a ramp or work through a flooded timber flat without the drive being the first thing to find the bottom.
That one design decision is why this kayak ends up on rivers as often as lakes.
The Flex Drive Mark IV
A propeller drive moves a kayak differently from a fin drive. The pedals turn rather than push, the stroke is continuous, and you can hold a slow troll with less effort than a fin drive takes. Steering runs off a hand control within easy reach of the seat.
The retraction is the headline. Pull the drive up and the propeller comes with it into a recess in the hull, so there is nothing projecting below the keel line. That turns shallow water from something you plan around into something you pedal through, and it makes beaching the kayak a normal end to a trip rather than a careful operation.
Seats, and which year you are looking at
2026 models carry the Comfort Seat 5.0, which has a deeper ergonomic base. The deeper base does two things at once: it holds your posture better across a long day, and it drops your center of gravity, which you feel when you turn to land a fish.
2025 and earlier models come with the Comfort Seat 4.0. Both are good seats. If you are comparing a current kayak against a used one, this is the specification difference worth knowing about.
The deck
The bow is bungee-less, which sounds like a small thing until you have spent a season picking a fly line or a jig skirt out of deck rigging. Jackson left it off deliberately and the bow is close to snag-free as a result.
Front and rear hatches run a heavy-duty latch system with proper seals, so what goes inside stays drier through waves and a downpour than a friction-fit lid manages. The rear tank well is sized around an Orion Core 25, so a cooler that size drops in rather than perching.
Gear tracks run bow to stern. Rod tip protectors are molded in. Deck pads cover the standing area and keep it quiet underfoot, which matters more in clear shallow water than anglers expect.
Electronics and a motor
There is a pass-through built in for through-hull fish finder wiring, so the transducer cable has a route that does not involve drilling your own hole or running it over a gunwale.
On the stern, a four-hole bolt pattern is molded in for a Power-Pole or a Torqeedo trolling motor mount adaptor. The Power-Pole Micro Anchor is the common first add, and it pairs with the Micro Battery Pak.
Coosa FD or Coosa X
The Coosa X is the paddle kayak in the family. It is lighter, simpler and cheaper to keep running, and on small rivers where you are mostly drifting and correcting, a paddle is genuinely the better tool.
The Coosa FD earns its place when you want your hands free. Trolling, holding position in wind, working a bank while casting: all of those are easier when your legs are doing the moving. The drive adds weight, which is the honest trade.
What it weighs
109 pounds for the hull, 115 with the seat, 128.5 with the seat and the upper drive in place. Those are three different numbers for three different moments, and the one that matters is 128.5, because that is what you are moving when the kayak is ready to fish.
The Jackson hatch bin fits this hull and is the tidiest way to stop loose tackle migrating into the bow. For the walk from the truck, our kayak cart guide covers what suits which ground.
Jackson Coosa FD Questions, Answered
How much weight will the Coosa FD carry?
450 pounds. That covers you, a crate, a cooler in the rear well, a battery and electronics.
How much does it weigh?
109 pounds bare hull, 115 with the seat, and 128.5 pounds with the seat and the upper drive installed. The last number is the realistic one for planning a cart or a lift.
What does the Flex Drive Mark IV retracting actually get me?
It lets you keep going where a fixed drive would stop. The propeller pulls up into the hull so nothing hangs below the keel, which covers beaching, gravel bars, flooded timber and shallow flats. It also makes loading and unloading simpler.
Coosa FD or Coosa HD?
Same hull and deck. The FD adds the Flex Drive Mark IV pedal drive and the weight that comes with it. The HD is the paddle version. If you want your hands free for trolling or for holding a position, take the FD.
Will a cooler fit in the rear tank well?
Yes, and the well is sized around an Orion Core 25 specifically. A cooler that size sits down in it rather than balancing on the rim.
Can I mount a Power-Pole or a trolling motor?
Yes. There is a four-hole bolt pattern molded into the stern for a Power-Pole or a Torqeedo trolling motor mount adaptor, so neither one is a custom job.
Which seat comes on it?
2026 models carry the Comfort Seat 5.0, with a deeper ergonomic base for better posture and a lower center of gravity. 2025 and earlier models have the Comfort Seat 4.0.
Where can I fish it?
Calm lakes, rivers, and coastal and offshore saltwater. The retracting drive is what makes the river and shallow coastal end of that range practical rather than theoretical.
