Always Expect The Unexpected

Always Expect The Unexpected

When fishing its always a good idea to be on alert and expect anything at any given time. Most of the time fishing is pretty cut and dry, you cast your bait or lure of choice into whatever body of water, either reel it or impart some sort of action and then wait for the strike. But we all know that sometimes our equipment malfunctions and what I previously stated goes out the window. For instance on a recent fishing trip I was casting into an eddie when I realized I had a huge loop in my line. I quickly reeled in the line and turned upstream to make a long cast to get the loop out. Unfortunately, this cast wasn’t long enough to get the loop out, so I had to resort in pulling the line off by hand until I got it out. While I was working on my line, my lure had drifted down into the rapids and as I started reeling in a mile of line the unexpected happened. I noticed my line was working its way back up through the rapids, so I quickly reeled in the slack and set the hook. After an awesome fight and a good laugh, it dawned on me that sometimes fish are going to bite whether your ready or not. So always be prepared and pay attention to your line, it may cost you in the long run.
