On most of my kayak fishing trips where I encounter a curious onlooker, I hear some form of the following. “Man you sure are braver than me for fishing out of that thing”. The implication is that kayak fishing is an extreme sport only for the daring anglers willing to trust a small plastic boat to keep them afloat and out of the water. Perhaps these people have paddled a kayak before or know someone else who has and the experience didn’t go so well with them ending up in the drink. What the experienced kayak angler knows is that today’s fishing kayaks are built to provide high levels of comfort and stability. There is no doubt that any watersport brings certain risks. However, with proper precautions such as constant PFD use, today’s fishing kayaks are no more of a risk than any other watercraft. This past year saw kayak manufacturers raise the bar where it comes to on the water stability. For this reason, I am starting to see a new breed of kayak angler enter the sport. This past year, Jackson Kayak introduced the Big Rig. The Big Rig is built for supreme stability for the kayak angler. Because of its supreme stability, the Big Rig allows larger anglers, such as myself, the ability to stand and fish with ease. I talked about this in a previous post that can be read here. This level of true “standing fish-ability” for most anyone has caused some power boat owners to take notice. Not only have these power boat owners taken notice but many have made the jump or are considering entering the fast growing sport of kayak fishing. They now see that they can still fish with the same techniques they use in their bass boat but now in waters they could not reach before. These converted bass boaters see that you do not fall into the water on every trip like they might have once feared. Many keep their bass boat. There is that old saying, different horses for different courses. However, I have spoken with some that have said goodbye to the bass boat, likely for good. Let’s face it, the list of people that can drop 40,000 plus on a new bass boat gets shorter every year with wages having stagnated for the average American. Ultra-stable fishing kayaks like the Jackson Kayak Big Rig provide an affordable alternative to the fisherman who wants to be able to stand while fishing, while enjoying the added benefits of kayak fishing such as the stealthy approach and access to otherwise unfishable waters. With the Jackson Kayak Big Rig, you do not have to be brave to enjoy the sport of kayak fishing.
