Old Town Sportsman BigWater PDL 132 Review
Let us put you in the right kayak. If you fish water with some fetch to it, big reservoirs, coastal bays, tidal rivers, the Old Town Sportsman BigWater PDL 132 is the one you want in Old Town's pedal line. Thirteen feet two inches, 36 inches wide, 500 pounds of total capacity.
People search for this kayak as the BigWater 132 PDL and as the BigWater PDL 132. Old Town's name for it is the Sportsman BigWater PDL 132, and it is the 13 ft 2 in pedal kayak in the Sportsman family.
Length is the whole argument
A 13 ft 2 in hull carries speed between spots and holds a line in chop that shoves a shorter kayak sideways. Open water is where that length pays off. On a windy afternoon with a mile of open surface in front of you, the extra feet are doing real work.
The bottom is a tri-hull, which is a different shape from the DoubleU hull on the shorter PDL kayaks. Old Town built the tri-hull around open-water stability. It trades some of the DoubleU's quick turning for a kayak that behaves better when the water is not flat.
The PDL Drive
The PDL Drive gives you instant forward and reverse from the pedals. It is saltwater-ready and it carries a 5 year warranty. Rinse the drive, the rudder hardware and the tracks with fresh water after every salt trip and that is the whole maintenance story.
A rudder is included, oversized for a kayak this long and run from the seat.
What comes on it that does not come on the others
Two things set the BigWater apart from the rest of the Old Town pedal kayaks we stock.
Mounting plates are included. This is the only one in the lineup that ships with them. They give you hard mounting points for accessories that need more than a track will hold.
The shallow water anchor mount is already there. Inserts are in the hull for a stake-out pole, so adding one later is a bolt-on rather than a drilling job.
On top of that there are four accessory tracks, two forward and two in the stern, so electronics and rod holders are not competing for the same rail. Rod holders are included, there are bow and center hatches, and the large stern tank well has a removable bungee that takes a cooler, a bait bucket or a loaded crate.
The seat is the Element Seating System with shuttle-track leg adjustment, lumbar support and draining mesh.
The weight numbers that matter
Assembled weight is 122 pounds. The pedal console is 21 pounds and the removable seat is 6, so pull both and you are moving a 95 pound hull. Thirteen feet at 122 pounds assembled is a two-person lift or a cart job, so plan on a trailer, a bed rack, a hitch hauler or a second set of hands depending on how you haul.
On capacity, read the second number. Total Weight Capacity is 500 pounds. That includes the assembled kayak, you, your gear, your dog and the pedal console. Usable Weight Capacity is 378 pounds, which is what is left for people, gear and pets once the kayak itself comes out of the total. Usable is the number to plan against.

How it fits next to the rest of the Old Town pedal line
Steer by the water you fish.
Big lakes, bays and tidal rivers where wind has room to build: the Sportsman BigWater PDL 132.
Mixed water and tighter rivers where turning matters: the Sportsman PDL 120 runs the DoubleU hull with two shallow keel lines and turns easily.
Short hauls and smaller water: the Sportsman PDL 106.
Covering distance under motor power: the Sportsman AutoPilot 120 and the AutoPilot 136.

Old Town Sportsman BigWater PDL 132 Questions, Answered
Who is this kayak for?
Anglers on big water. Large reservoirs, coastal bays, tidal rivers, anywhere the wind has a mile of open surface to work with. Open water is where the 13 ft 2 in length pays off.
How is the tri-hull different from the DoubleU hull?
The DoubleU on the Sportsman PDL 120 runs two shallow keel lines and turns easily. The BigWater uses a tri-hull bottom Old Town built around open-water stability. You trade some quick turning for a kayak that handles chop better.
Is it saltwater safe?
The PDL Drive is saltwater-ready and Old Town rates it that way. Rinse the drive, the rudder hardware and the tracks with fresh water after every salt trip.
What is the difference between Total and Usable Weight Capacity?
Total Weight Capacity is everything the kayak can support in the water, including the assembled kayak itself, people, gear, pets and the pedal console. Usable Weight Capacity is what is left for people, gear and pets after the kayak's own weight comes out. Usable, 378 pounds here, is the number to plan against.
What are the mounting plates for?
Hard mounting points for accessories that need more than a track will hold. This is the only Old Town pedal kayak we stock that includes them.
Can I transport it alone?
Thirteen feet and 122 pounds assembled is a two-person lift or a cart. Pull the 21 pound console and the 6 pound seat first and the hull is 95 pounds. A trailer, a bed rack or a hitch hauler all work depending on how you haul.
What does the warranty cover?
The hull and deck carry a limited lifetime warranty from the original purchase date and the PDL Drive is covered for 5 years. Coverage is for the original retail purchaser only and does not transfer. Keep your proof of purchase and your maintenance records, because Old Town asks for both. Normal wear, sun damage, commercial use, unauthorized repair and modifications are excluded.
Who handles a warranty claim?
Claims go to Johnson Outdoors, not to us. Their instruction is plain: do not return a JOWC product to your retailer for warranty repair. Call 800-343-1555 and take option 2 with your proof of purchase, the serial number and a description of the problem. They issue a return authorization number before anything ships.
Do I need a life jacket with it?
Yes, and the law requires one on board. The Old Town Outfitter Universal is a USCG Type III with a thin-back cut for kayak seats.
