As the water temperatures cool down each fall, we as kayak anglers have to start thinking about how we are going to keep our feet warm and dry as we enter and exit our watercraft. In the past, I had used knee-high rubber boots. The cost was nice and they got the job done from a functional standpoint so I tolerated them for a couple of seasons. There was one major drawback to these rubber boots that I could no longer ignore. They simply were not comfortable while seated in my kayak. Because of the discomfort caused by wearing the rubber boots, I knew I needed a better solution. I had seen the NRS Boundary Shoe previously and decided to give it a try. The Boundary Shoe is actually a boot made of neoprene that comes up the leg just below the knee. It is a product made specifically for paddlesports enthusiasts. After using these boots for several trips this fall, I wish I had tried them sooner. They have essentially eliminated my need to wear waders for cold weather kayak fishing. To me, the biggest advantage of the NRS Boundary Shoe is the fact that it is made of a completely flexible neoprene material. This allows for total range of motion with your ankle joint. Because of this, I find that the discomfort I used to experience with my rubber boots is a thing of the past. Outdoor clothing should serve its purpose without the wearer having to think about it and the Boundary Shoe from NRS does just that. There are two questions that I have been asked about the Boundary Shoe. First, people want to know if they run true to size. The simple answer to that is yes. I base this answer on what I have been told by other users and in a round-about way, my own experience. My feet are wide so I usually have to go up to a size 13 in most shoes. I was able to fit comfortably into a size 12 in the Boundary Shoe. I also get asked about warmth. I wear merino wool socks with the Boundary Shoe and have been quite pleased with the level of warmth experienced while wearing this combination.
The NRS Boundary Shoe has found a home in my cool weather gear arsenal. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a boot to wear for those times where waders are overkill but you need to keep your feet warm and dry.
