Best Pedal Kayaks 2026: Hobie, Native, Old Town, Bonafide and Jackson Compared
A pedal kayak gives you both hands back. You hold position in current, work a bank, cast and retrieve, and the kayak keeps moving where your legs point it. Five brands build pedal kayaks worth your money in 2026: Hobie, Native Watercraft, Old Town, Bonafide and Jackson Kayak. We stock all five at Caney Fork Outdoors and ship them nationwide. This guide compares them by what matters on the water.
There is no single best pedal kayak. There is the right one for your water, your truck and how much you stand. Short version by use. Loading alone onto a roof: Hobie Lynx, Native Slayer Propel 10 LTE, Hobie Compass, Hobie Passport 12 R. Lakes and mixed water: Jackson Bite FD, Hobie Outback, Old Town Sportsman PDL 120, Bonafide P127, Hobie Compass. Standing all day: Native Titan X 12.5, Jackson Big Rig FD, Bonafide XTR140P, Hobie Pro Angler 14, Native Titan X 10.5. Rivers and shallow water: Any Jackson with Flex Drive, any Hobie with Kick-Up Fins, Old Town Sportsman PDL 106. Big water: Hobie Pro Angler 14, Jackson Knarr FD, Old Town Sportsman Bigwater PDL 132, Native Slayer Propel Max 12.5. Pedal and motor as one system: Native Hammer 1210, the newest pedal kayak of the year. Lowest cost of entry: Hobie Passport 12 R, Jackson Bite FD, Native Slayer Propel 10 LTE, Old Town Sportsman PDL 106.
The pedal drives, brand by brand
The drive is the kayak. Pick the drive first, then the hull.
Hobie MirageDrive. A fin drive. Two fins under the hull sweep side to side as you pedal. The MirageDrive 180 and 180 Turbo give forward and full-power reverse. Kick-Up Fins fold back on their own when they hit bottom, which is why Hobie owners run skinny water without thinking about it. The MirageDrive GT on the Passport line also has Kick-Up Fins. The MirageDrive 360 on the Pro Angler 360 pushes thrust in any direction, so you can slide the kayak sideways or spin it in place.
Old Town PDL Drive. A pedal-driven propeller with instant forward and reverse. It is not a fin drive. Saltwater ready, with a five year drive warranty. The console lifts out of the kayak for transport.
Jackson Kayak Flex Drive Mark IV. A propeller pedal drive with forward and reverse. The propeller retracts up into the hull, which is what lets the Coosa FD run rivers and shallow water where a fixed prop cannot go.
Native Watercraft Propel Pedal Drive 701 Series. Hands-free forward and reverse with a 10:1 gear ratio. It is the same drive across the Titan X and Slayer Propel lines.
Native Watercraft Propel X-Range Pedal Drive. New for 2026, patent pending, and only on the Hammer 1210. It folds onto the bow deck to open up the cockpit, then deploys in seconds with a one-handed twist-lock. It has a pivoting control arm, an auto-aligning latch, a built-in weed cutter, and a twist-lock cover with an integrated dry pod, so the drive well becomes storage when the drive is up.
Bonafide Propel Pedal Drive and X Range 801 Propel Drive. The P127 runs a Propel Pedal Drive with forward and reverse. The XTR140P runs the X Range 801 Propel Drive, hands free, with two stow positions.
All of these let you keep a paddle on board for shallows and backup. All of them are hands free. Reverse is the feature you will use more than you expect, for backing off a laydown and for holding in current. Every drive above states reverse outright except the MirageDrive GT and the Propel X-Range, where the brand does not publish a reverse claim.

Brands publish weight differently. Hobie, Native and Bonafide list a fitted or hull number and a fully rigged number. Jackson lists hull, with seat, and with seat and drive. Old Town lists Assembled Boat Weight with the console and seat in, and both lift out. Old Town also splits capacity into Total Weight Capacity and Usable Weight Capacity, and the usable number is the one to plan against. Compare each one to the same in class.
Best pedal kayak for loading alone
The Hobie Lynx is the lightest pedal kayak here by a wide margin. 47 pounds fitted, 63 fully rigged, on an ACE-TEC hull instead of rotomolded plastic, with a full MirageDrive 180 under it. It is 36 inches wide with an EVA standing pad. Hobie does not list rod holders on it, so plan on adding them.
Next come the Native Slayer Propel 10 LTE at 65 pounds fitted, the lightest and least expensive way into a Propel drive, and the Hobie Compass at 68 pounds fitted. The Hobie Passport 12 R at 73 pounds is close behind and comes with the fishing parts on it.
Best pedal kayaks for lakes and mixed water
Most pedal kayak days are a lake, a reservoir or a slow river, with some wind and some shallow bank. Four kayaks from four brands cover that water, and the choice between them comes down to drive, weight and seat.
The Hobie Outback: 12 feet 9 inches, 34 inches wide, 85 pounds fitted. The MirageDrive 180 Turbo gives full-power reverse and the Kick-Up Fins handle skinny water. The Vantage CTW seat is 1.5 inches wider than a standard Vantage and rated to 275 pounds. You can stand in it, with the note that it is less of a platform than a 38 inch Pro Angler. Light enough to car-top and load alone.
The Old Town Sportsman PDL 120: 12 feet, 36 inches wide, 116 pounds assembled with the 19 pound console and 6 pound seat in, 91 pounds with them out. 500 pounds Total Weight Capacity, 384 pounds Usable Weight Capacity. The DoubleU hull is quiet and stable enough to fish standing, and it holds a line in wind and chop. Rotomolded in Maine. Pick it for the propeller drive and the two extra inches of beam.
The Bonafide P127: 12 feet 7 inches, 34 inches wide, 100 pounds for the hull and 120 fitted with seat and drive. 475 pound capacity. A Propel Pedal Drive with forward and reverse on a flat, uncluttered standing deck. It tracks straight on open water and turns in creek arms. Pick it if you want Bonafide's hull and the most capacity in this group.
The Hobie Compass: same 34 inch beam as the Outback, 17 pounds lighter at 68 pounds fitted, with the MirageDrive 180, Kick-Up Fins and reverse. Pick it if you are not sure yet whether you are an angler or a paddler, or if weight decides it.
Best pedal kayak for standing
Forty inches of beam is the number. Three pedal kayaks have it.
The Native Titan X 12.5: 12 feet 8 inches, 40 inches wide, no-slip deck padding, PivotPro swivel seat with an under-seat tackle drawer. Native calls it the most advanced kayak in the Propel 701 line. Anglers stand and fish on it in wind and boat wake. It is also the most electronics-ready pedal kayak here, with a stern motor mount, inserts for a bow motor mount plate, and stern battery storage for a 100AH or dual 60AH batteries.
The Jackson Kayak Big Rig FD: 13 feet 3 inches, 40 inches wide, 550 pound capacity, the highest solo capacity in Jackson's fishing lineup. Stable enough to sight fish and throw a fly rod standing. Four-bolt stern pattern for Power-Pole and trolling motor mounts. Hatch Bin included.
The Bonafide XTR140P with the X Range 801 Propel Drive: 14 feet, 40 inches wide, 725 pound capacity, a 24 by 80 inch walkable floor with a bow to stern walkthrough. The widest hull Bonafide builds. Big water only.
Two more worth naming. The Hobie Pro Angler 14 at 38 inches is the most stable standing platform in Hobie's line. The Native Titan X 10.5 puts 38 inches on a 10 foot 8 inch hull, a real standing platform on a compact kayak.
Newest pedal kayak of 2026: Native Hammer 1210
The Native Hammer 1210 is the new top of the Native lineup and the only kayak running the Propel X-Range Pedal Drive. 12 feet 10 inches, 36 inches wide, 110 pounds fitted, 140 pounds fully rigged. Capacity 650 pounds, the highest Native publishes.
The drive is the headline. The X-Range folds cleanly onto the bow deck for maximum cockpit space and deploys in seconds with a one-handed twist-lock. A built-in weed cutter sits on the drive itself. The twist-lock cover has an integrated dry pod, so you get storage, not a hole, when the drive is stowed.
Dual propulsion is the other headline. Native built this hull to run pedal and electric motor together as one designed-in system. Bow motor ready with foot steering and spot-lock. Stern motor ready with trim balancing, a reinforced tankwell and reserve buoyancy. The battery compartment takes a Group 31 or the Newport LoPro, with a bow battery hatch and wire management on top of that.
Rigging is everywhere. Groove Track runs around the entire kayak, plus PowerLink plates and a Captain's Bridge mount. YakAttack through-hull monitor links. A Spring Blade rudder that is Wizard foot steering ready, so steering goes hands free too. Pivot Pro swivel seating with a tackle tray built into the seat. A massive padded standing deck. It is Sidekick ready, so the Native Sidekick Wheel Transport System mounts to the Groove Track instead of being a separate cart you drag.
Native covers the Propel drive for 5 years against manufacturer defects, with the first 2 years top-to-bottom coverage of any issue. At 140 pounds rigged, plan on a trailer or a second person.
Hammer 1210 or Titan X 12.5? The Hammer has the X-Range drive, 650 pounds of capacity and a hull built around running a motor. The Titan X 12.5 is four inches wider at 40, rated to 500 pounds, and runs the Propel 701. If motorizing is the plan, the Hammer was built for it. If standing width is the plan, the Titan X.
Best pedal kayak for rivers and shallow water
The Jackson Kayak Coosa FD. The Flex Drive Mark IV retracts its propeller up into the hull, so the Coosa FD goes where a fixed-prop drive cannot: rivers, shallow water, moving current. 12 feet 7 inches, 35 inches wide, built on the Coosa HD hull, with deck pads for standing. Four-bolt stern pattern for Power-Pole and trolling motors.
Hobie's Kick-Up Fins make every MirageDrive 180 kayak a strong second here. The fins fold back on contact instead of stopping the kayak. For tight creeks and ponds, the Old Town Sportsman PDL 106 puts the PDL Drive under the shortest hull Old Town offers it in, 10 feet 6 inches, and turns where longer kayaks cannot.
Best pedal kayak for big water
Length and capacity carry the day when wind has room to build.
The Hobie Pro Angler 14 is the big one. 13 feet 8 inches, 38 inches wide, 600 pound capacity, Vantage ST seat on barrel adjusters. It holds a line in wind and chop where a 12 foot hull gets shoved around. Hobie also builds the Pro Angler 14 360 with the MirageDrive 360, the drive that moves the kayak in any direction and holds an exact position in moving water or wind.
The Jackson Kayak Knarr FD is the longest kayak in Jackson's pedal lineup at 13 feet 9 inches, shaped alongside big-water tournament anglers for ocean, open lake, surf, current and tidal flats. Bow and stern are built for trolling motor installation, and rod management holds up to six rods.
The Old Town Sportsman Bigwater PDL 132 is 13 feet 2 inches with a tri-hull built for stability when the water is not flat. 500 pounds Total Weight Capacity, 378 pounds Usable Weight Capacity. Mounting plates and a shallow water anchor mount come included. On a small pond the length works against you.
The Native Slayer Propel Max 12.5 is the big-water Slayer, rated by Native for offshore salt, inshore salt and freshwater, with easy bow and stern mounting for a Power-Pole Micro or a motor.
Best pedal kayak on a budget
The Hobie Passport 12 R is where Hobie's value line stops being a compromise. It is the Passport with the fishing parts added, an EVA standing platform, a suspended mesh seat and the MirageDrive GT with Kick-Up Fins, at a lower price than the Outback.
The Jackson Kayak Bite FD is the most accessible price point in Jackson's pedal lineup. 11 feet 6 inches, 35 inches wide, 90.5 pounds for the hull, with the same Flex Drive Mark IV as the Big Rig FD and Coosa FD. It is one of the lighter options for anglers who car-top or solo launch.
The Native Slayer Propel 10 LTE is the lightest and least expensive way into a Propel 701 drive. The Old Town Sportsman PDL 106 is the shortest and lightest PDL kayak.

How to choose a pedal kayak
Start with how you get it to the water. If you load alone onto a roof, stay under 90 pounds fitted: Lynx, Slayer Propel 10 LTE, Compass, Passport 12 R, Outback. A truck bed or trailer opens up everything else. Every pedal kayak over 100 pounds wants a cart or a second person.
Then pick the water. Rivers and shallows: any Jackson Kayak with Flex Drive, then any Hobie with Kick-Up Fins. Ponds and creeks: PDL 106, Titan X 10.5, Slayer Propel 10 LTE. Lakes: Outback, PDL 120, Compass, P127. Big open water and saltwater: Pro Angler 14, Knarr FD, Bigwater PDL 132, Slayer Propel Max 12.5, Hammer 1210, XTR140P.
Then decide how much you stand. All day: Titan X 12.5, Big Rig FD, XTR140P, Pro Angler 14, Pro Angler 12. Some: Hammer 1210, Outback, Compass, Passport 12 R, Lynx, PDL 120, Coosa FD. The Slayer Propel 10 LTE and Slayer Propel Max 12.5 make no standing claim.
Then think about a motor. If you want pedal and trolling motor on the same kayak, the Hammer 1210 was designed for exactly that. The Titan X 12.5 and 10.5, Big Rig FD, Knarr FD, Coosa FD, Bite FD, XTR140P, Slayer Propel Max 12.5 and Slayer Propel 10 LTE all state a motor mount or motor-ready stern.

Pedal Kayak Questions, Answered
What is the best pedal kayak for fishing?
The one that fits your water. Lakes and mixed water: Hobie Outback, Old Town Sportsman PDL 120, Bonafide P127 or Hobie Compass. Rivers and shallow water: Jackson Kayak Coosa FD. Big open water: Hobie Pro Angler 14, Jackson Knarr FD, Old Town Sportsman Bigwater PDL 132 or Native Slayer Propel Max 12.5. Standing all day: Native Titan X 12.5, Jackson Big Rig FD or Bonafide XTR140P. Pedal and motor together: Native Hammer 1210. Every one of them runs a hands-free drive, and the sections above walk through each.
Fin drive or propeller drive?
Hobie's MirageDrive is a fin drive. Old Town's PDL Drive and Jackson's Flex Drive Mark IV are propeller drives. Native's Propel X-Range on the Hammer 1210 folds up onto the bow deck. Hobie's Kick-Up Fins fold back when they hit bottom. Jackson's Flex Drive retracts its propeller into the hull. Both approaches solve shallow water. The Old Town PDL lifts out of the kayak as a console. Pedal a few if you can and go with the one your legs like.
Do all pedal kayaks have reverse?
Most do. The Hobie MirageDrive 180 and 180 Turbo, Old Town PDL Drive, Jackson Flex Drive Mark IV, Native Propel 701 and Bonafide Propel drives all state forward and reverse. Hobie publishes no reverse claim for the MirageDrive GT on the Passport line, so if reverse matters most, the Compass is the Hobie to pick over the Passport. Native publishes no reverse claim for the Propel X-Range on the Hammer 1210 either. Ask us before you buy if that is the deciding feature.
What is the lightest pedal kayak?
The Hobie Lynx at 47 pounds fitted and 63 pounds fully rigged. The Native Slayer Propel 10 LTE at 65 pounds fitted is the lightest rotomolded pedal kayak we carry.
Can you stand in a pedal kayak?
In most of them. Width is what matters. The Native Titan X 12.5, Jackson Big Rig FD and Bonafide XTR140P are 40 inches wide. The Hobie Pro Angler 14 and Native Titan X 10.5 are 38. The Outback, Compass and Passport 12 R are 34 inches and still standable for most people.
Can you paddle a pedal kayak?
Yes. Every pedal kayak here can be paddled. Keep a paddle on board for shallows, for getting off a launch, and as a backup.
Can you put a trolling motor on a pedal kayak?
On many of them. The Native Hammer 1210 was built for it, bow motor ready with foot steering and spot-lock, stern motor ready with trim balancing. The Native Titan X 12.5 and 10.5 have a stern motor mount and inserts for a bow mount plate. The Jackson Big Rig FD, Coosa FD and Bite FD have a four-bolt stern pattern for trolling motors. The Knarr FD is built for bow and stern motors. The Bonafide XTR140P is motor and electronics ready with the pedal drive in it.
How do pedal kayaks ship?
Two ways. If you are inside our delivery area, local delivery shows up as a shipping option at checkout and we bring the boat to you ourselves. We call ahead to set a meet-up, and since we do the unloading there is nothing for you to inspect or sign at the curb. Otherwise it ships LTL freight with a carrier running a 99.9% damage-free rate. On a freight delivery, look the boat over before you sign the receipt and write down any damage you see. That one step protects your claim. Then email clear photos to helpdesk@cfoutdoors.com within 2 hours. We email the full details once your order is placed.
