Why I Chose NuCanoe

Posted by Kevin McCullough on Mar 1st 2017

I got into kayak fishing after selling my bass boat back in 2010. My first try at kayak fishing was actually from a solo canoe. While I enjoyed fishing the rivers, I never felt comfortable in the canoe. Flipping the canoe in front of a few folks who were using the local Greenway was the last straw. While it was funny to them my day in a canoe where pretty much over after that. I sold it shortly after. My journey into kayaks started with research. Being 6’5″, what one might call husky, and also very clumsy stability was top on my list. Another thing I wanted was something I could take my daughter out with me if she wanted to go. I didn’t want a tandem but I wanted something I could us solo most of the time and double up when needed. This led me to a 10′ NuCanoe Classic. I bought my first Nucanoe in February of 2011. It worked out great and I caught a lot of fish from it. I also got to paddle rivers I had always wanted to try. As my daughter got older the 10 footer started getting pretty tight with the two of us. About this time NuCanoe came out with the Frontier. As part of Team NuCanoe I was lucky enough to try one out before they came out. Blake Young with Nucanoe was doing a cross country trip to show it off. It put it through my test and decided I had to get one. This was the beginning of me being a two kayak owner. The NuCanoe Frontier was perfect for me. I can haul all of my equipment, which is too much most of the time, and still have plenty of room to fish and stand up. My Frontier isn’t the fastest kayak around but I have never been fast so it doesn’t bother me. I have fished lakes, oceans, intercostal waters (with and without the wife), rivers, streams, and ponds. I duck hunt with it, fish from it, paddle both my daughters around. It is my SUV.

The next big thing NuCanoe came out with was the NuCanoe Frontier 10. I ended up selling my NuCanoe Classic 10 footer and bought me a Frontier 10. It has become my go to boat on ponds and creeks. It turns on a dime and has close to if not the same stability as the Frontier 12. This catches me up to current times. I have a Frontier 10 and a Frontier 12. I love both of these boats and use both in different places. NuCanoe is getting ready to come out with another kayak. The new kayak will be called the Pursuit. It will be a good mixture of speed and stability. I got to try out the prototype in October and man I was sold. I’ll add it to my fleet as soon as I can. With all of this being said why did I choose NuCanoe over other brands? Let me start off by saying I have not tried all brands or models of kayaks. I got really lucky and found exactly what I wanted my first try. Since then I have tried others but I’ve never found one I like as much. There are a bunch of good kayaks out there and I think they keep getting better. One piece of advice I’ll give is try before you buy if you can. If you have a few different brands in mind try them out if possible. Caney Fork Outdoors will be glad to help you out with that if possible. I chose NuCanoe for stability, the open deck, the chance to fish solo or tandem, the many rigging options, the duck blind, the weight capacity, the rowing system, the option of using a trolling motor, and because I really like the customer service. Caney Fork Outdoors is now a Nucanoe dealer and is the place to go if you need to get any of the NuCanoes or accessories. If you have any questions about the NuCanoe, please drop me a line.
